DF95 - Club Championships R1 (Handicap racing) - 7 February 2026
Round 1 of the DF95 Cub Championships - Handicap Series was today held in a pleasant but weakening East/South-easterly with 10 skippers hitting the water for an action-packed afternoon. The first 8-9 races had guests at times causing a few boats to nosedive downwind with the breeze definitely weakening by race 12 with some drifting conditions around the bottom gate causing frustrations for many.
Racing was again close with the excellent handicaps seeing most of the fleet finishing within boat lengths of each other. This can also be seen with 8 different winners in the first 8 races of the day. Congratulations everyone for a competitive but friendly day of racing.
The day's winner was one of our most recent members to join, Anthony Loveridge finishing on 33 points. Anthony not only won race 3 but finished with 3 second places and 2 thirds from the 12 races. Congratulations Anthony, great start to the season. Warren Kerswell was able to secure second place by 1 point in front of the ever consistent Terry Jordan on 41 points.
Just a reminder that the 2025 Club Champion trophies and prizes will be handed out next weekend before sailing starts at the usual time of 1pm. Even if you can't stay around for sail, come on down to congratulate last season's winners.
DF65 - Club Championships R1 (Handicap racing) - 24 January
Even with 3-4 of our regular members away today we had a great turnout of 12 boats for the 1st Round of the Club Championships for 2026.
Although it was a very warm afternoon, all the skippers kept their cool during very close racing including some mark roundings being 3-4 boats deep. Finishes also kept the RO and scorer busy where one bad tack or a touch of the finish mark saw boats going from 2nd to 9th.
Although there was some contact, as expected during close racing, thank you to everyone for both doing their penalties as well as talking to each other before incidents happen. I feel we are always happy to discuss any questions around rules and incidents; no one is perfect and misjudgments will happen.
Thank you also to everyone for taking their turn as RO during the afternoon.
As for the results, Greg showed a brilliant start to the season finishing in 1st place on 24.5 points; a huge 21 points ahead of both Russell and David Kerr with both finishing on 45.5 points and Russell taking out second spot on countback. David Proctor finished 4th on 47.4 points, well sailed skippers.
A special mention to Greg who finished the day as one of the back markers on 70 seconds and was still able to finish 2nd and 4th in the last two races, excellent sailing. Just a reminder, the next round we start race 1 on the same handicaps as we finished today (photos have been taken and no bribes accepted).
I hope everyone stays cool in the coming days with temperatures predicted to be around 35-37 degrees and have a good week.
DF95 - Results Saturday 17 January
With a good turnout of 12 boats on the water, the first DF95 sailing for the year was a success and a good shake down for the boats with the 1st rounds of the 2026 Club Championships starting over the next few weekends.
Thank you to all the skippers for some close racing, good talking during mark rounding and taking your penalties when needed. Although there were some calls of "not there" when a penalty circle was done a little close to other boats, this is a good skill to practice in order to get the penalty done and back racing as quickly as possible.
Racing was a mixture of handicap and scratch racing and thank you again to Bob for coming down and helping with the starting and scoring duties. The handicap races showed some very close finishes with one race having 5 boats cross all overlapped and the whole fleet finishing with 30 seconds from 1st to 12th. Great sailing everyone.
As to the results, Warren won the day on 30 points and showing that is not always winning the race but being consistent. Warren won 2 races but was only out of the top 4 finishes 3 times the whole day which included the handicap races with Warren being one of the last starters on 60-70 seconds. Great sailing Warren. Don secored Second spot on 33 points and Mark (who has not had a chance to sail for some time) showed some great speed during the day securing 3rd on 40 points.
Finally, just a small change in the calendar with Coomera Radio Sailing club planning to host a Ron Brown Memorial Trophy day on the 4th of July for DF95's. This day was already in our calendar as a DF95 Club day but the calendar will be updated shortly to reflect this change as more information is obtained.
I hope everyone has a great week and see you on the water soon.

DF65 - Results Saturday 10 January
The first official sailing day of 2026 was held at the lake yesterday with a small but competitive group of skippers shaking off the cobwebs. I am happy to report there were no mechanical issues with everyone clearly taking the last few weeks to service and maintain their boats. There were also very few contacts that I can recall, and talking and calling between skippers was well practiced during the afternoon.
Welcome also to our newest skipper, Anthony, who has recently purchased a DF65. With a third place in the first race and taking out the last 2 races for the day, I am certain Anthony is now hooked and will be seen regularly at the lake.
The day's sailing was a mixture of handicap and scratch races with Don setting the day by taking out the first three races and finishing in 1st place on 25 points. I was able to secure second place by one point to David with Greg rounding out the top 4 places.
Next weekend will give the DF95's a chance for a shakedown sail before the first rounds of the 2026 club championships kick off on the 24th of January.
I hope everyone has a great week and see you on the water soon.

DF65 - Results Saturday 13 Dec - Club Championships Double header
The double-header (both Scratch and Handicap racing) of Round 5 of the DF65 Club Championships was a great success and thank you everyone for keeping the day competitive but also friendly and moving smoothly with 16 races in total completed. With 15 skippers on the water, the start line was busy with a number of contacts called; especially with frustrating wind shifts seeming to come through in the last 5 seconds of a start.
Thank you also to Don for setting the course, there was no need for adjustments throughout the day which allowed for little delays between races.
The day started with 8 Scratch races with Gary Earl blasting out of the blocks and untouchable with 3 wins from the first 3 races and finishing with 4 wins in total. Greg Cater, Warren Kerswell, Grant Hudson and myself were able to take a win each, but Gary convincingly won the first session with 9 points, myself second (12.7 points) and Don (21.1 points) taking out third by the slimmest of margins (<1 point) from Grant in forth (22 points).
After the lunch break, the Handicaps were set and racing resumed with the Easterly breeze holding in all day. The Handicaps saw the fleet stretch out at the start with the back marker starting at 100 seconds but after his brilliant morning Gary really could not argue too fiercely. Even with a 90 second start he was still able to win race 5.
Overall, Marcel was able to remain consistent throughout the Handicap session taking out first place on 13.1 points, well ahead of Terry in second on 23.3 points and Greg rounding out the top 3 places on 28 points just ahead of 4 other skippers (Garham, Warren, John and Russell) who all finished on 29 points.
The presentations for club Champions will be held early in the new year so please keep an eye out in your emails. The ability to drop the worst result from 5 rounds has certainly made for a very close finish.
Next weekend will be the final day for the year with a number of scratch, handicap and novelty races planned. We will aim to start a little earlier (12pm) with the afternoon planned to allow time for a chat and socialise off the water. Feel free to pop down to the lake next weekend, even if you are not available to sail, just to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and reminisce about the year that was...
DF65 Club Day Results - 8 November
The predicted 15-20 knot Nor'easter did not disappoint and created some very choppy conditions on the lake today. And that challenged all competitors at some stage during the afternoon. Our numbers were down slightly today with some regulars away at interclub events. Our fearless leader and President Stephen who presence was missed was away defending the club honor at the DF95 SEQ champs and finishing a respectable 6th in a very good fleet of skippers.
The day was a mix of H/C and scratch racing which provided some close racing. We had several race winners and some exciting downhill runs particularly for those who persevered with thier A+ rigs
13 races were completed in all with the help of Greg a new DF convert who dropped by and carried out the starting and scoring duties for us. Many thanks for your efforts. Congratulations to the place getters.
Two reminders this week with no sailing at the lake this weekend as members are off to Springfield Lakes to compete in the final DF65 interclub for 2025. Let's wish the team some luck and patience and a good result to finish the year. The Redlands consists of Garth Halton, Don Horton, David Proctor, Stephen Elkington and David Kerr.
Cheers

DF65 results - 18 October Club Day
We kicked off the day with an Open Day, which had been advertised in the local paper to invite anyone interested in trying out RC sailing. While we didn’t see large numbers, several locals visited and expressed interest in returning over the coming weeks, which is great to see.
A big thank you to Don for organising the morning and for his continued efforts in engaging with the local paper and having articles continue to be included about the Club.
The lake remained a little shallower than usual, and thank you also to all the skippers who helped out by wading in to retrieve boats from the shoreline.
The afternoon's racing began in a building north-easterly breeze. The day was a mix of Handicap and Scratch races, with seven different winners across the twelve races.
With the predicted storms starting to build as the day progressed, the decision was made to continue racing without a break. This proved to be the right call, as the wind began to ease late in the afternoon as the storm approached the bay. Fortunately, we had just packed up and left when the rain arrived.
As for the results, I somehow managed to come out on top with 28 points and three wins for the afternoon. Marcel showed excellent consistency across both Handicap and Scratch races, finishing in second place on 30 points only 1 point head of Don, taking third place with 31 points.
Next weekend will see us host Coomera Radio Yacht Club in the second round of the DF95 Interclub competition. A formal notice of race will be issued shortly but would love to have as many DF95's from Redlands compete. We were so close in beating Coomera last round and feel with us being on "home turf" this round, this will be the year Redland can win the series.
I will send a separate email out asking for all skippers to confirm if they are sailing with the roles of Race Office, scorers and observers also to be confirmed.
Thanks again to everyone who came along and contributed to a successful day on and off the water and see you all soon.

DF95 results - 20 September 2025
It was great to be back at the lake yesterday, although numbers were a little down due to some of our regulars being away or unavailable, a good northerly breeze allowed 16 races to be finished until time was called around 4pm. Thank you to Dudley who "came down to watch for a while" but ended up being starter/score for the first seven races. Hopefully see you back at the lake next weekend with your 65.
I am sure at one stage Greg thought there must have been an unofficial game of tag being played with number 28 as 4 different boats in the first 3 races having made contact. Greg I promise I was not trying to make a new DF90 class when I misjudged crossing behind you. The rest of the day was relatively clean and again thank you to the skippers for talking well before any contact. A highlight of the day was a clean 5 boat rounding of the top mark with no contact.
As for the results, Don took 1st place with 20 points and 9 first place finishes, congratulations Don. I was able to secure 2nd place on 25 points with Terry in third on 33 points.
A reminder for the upcoming Wayne Bloomer trophy day on the 4th of October. Thank you to Don for arranging the trophy (photo attached) with this open for all DF65 skippers and please ensure you contact Don to register to sail on the day.
DF95 Club Championships Rd3 - Scratch - 16 August 2025
Another spectacular Brisbane winter's day at the lake yesterday with not a cloud in the sky, a mild 21 degrees and a good breeze.
I will start with a welcome to our two visitors yesterday Hank Beyer and David Brunsdon from Coomera. It was a pleasure to have you both sailing with us and can't wait to see you again during the next DF95 day. There were rumours they were scoping out the competition for the upcoming interclub event in September but as you will see in the results with them taking out Second and Third place, I feel there will be stiff competition between the clubs in the coming months.
I would also like to thank Philip for volunteering to tow the trailer yesterday, very much appreciated and thank you also to John Maccartney. John is one of our DF65 skippers who popped down to watch and ended up as scorer and started for the afternoon. John also had a sail during one of the races and he now seems very keen on sailing a DF95 and I am sure we will see him soon on the water with his own boat.
The day's sailing was excellent with the fleet of 9 skippers showing good skills in conditions that started in mid A rig winds but started to lighten in the afternoon. 13 races were completed and although everyone was keen to continue, the day was called as the winds dropped and it became a drifting event to see who could get their boat to the wall the fastest.
In the end, the results were very close for the top three, with myself and Hank finishing on equal 30 points with Hank losing on countback (not scorer's privilege). David took third place on 34 points with Warren in 4th on 38 points.
Next weekend will be Round 3 for DF65 Club Championships (scratch) with the usual start time and I hope everyone has a great week.
DF95 Club Championships Rd3 - Handicap
We finally got some typical winter weather for Brisbane yesterday with a nice westerly breeze, sunny skies and the temperature on the cooler side at around 20 degrees.
Thank you again Don for setting a great course and to David Kerr for volunteering to tow the trailer. Out of the 12 races we had 7 different winners with the handicaps well set with most races having all 8 boats rounding the final mark within boat lengths of each other.
Congratulations also to all the skippers as I can't recall many contacts between boats during the afternoon. The only exception was the contacts with the marks with the record going to myself in one race for contacting the top mark, clearance mark and bottom mark all in one leg. By my 3rd penalty turn I think I was getting dizzy.
As for the results, A big congratulations to Philip Frahm for his first win with 27 points. He has only sailed his DF95 about 5 times since purchasing it early this year and a good sign for the DF95 Interclub races coming up later this year.
In second place was David Kerr on 36 points and Graham Saltwell only 1 point behind in third on 37 points.
Now we are in August and well into the second half of the year, a reminder email will be sent shortly for all remaining events for the year. These include both rounds of the DF95 Interclub Competition between Coomera and ourselves, the DF65 Southeast Qld titles, the remaining DF65 interclub events and a new Wayne Bloomer trophy day to be held in October. It will be a busy few months.
I hope everyone has a great week with next Saturday being a DF65 club day.
DF95 Club Day results 19 July 2025
Back to a wonderful winter's day in Brisbane with a cloudless sky and a westerly wind which kept everyone busy trying to pick what direction the next shift was going to come from. We also had Garth Halton pop down to try his hand with a DF65 with success in finishing 2nd in the 1st race before the breeze picked up and the 95's showed the benefit of the longer hulls and that little more momentum in the lulls. With no official RO there were some questionable starts in a number of the races but overall everyone did their penalties, maintained a friendly and relaxed attitude with some rule discussions also held after racing which always is a benefit to skippers in having a better understanding of situations.
Moving to the result , the day was taken out by Don Horton on 15 points with myself and Terry finishing on equal 20 points but Terry being relegated to third on countback. Greg rounded out 4th place with 32 points.
A big thank you also to Philip Frahm who volunteered to tow the trailer, very much appreciated and thank you to all members who continue to help with the trailer each week, including the packing and unpacking with many hands making light work.
Just a final reminder that the club's calendar has previously been sent out at the beginning of the year with a copy also showing on our website (Redlands Radio SC - Events Calendar). Next Saturday is a DF65 club day with racing to start at the usual time of 1pm.
DF65 Club Championship Rd3 - Scratch results 12 July 2025
Rd3 of the DF65 Club Championships (scratch) was held yesterday afternoon with 13 skippers coming down to the lake for a great afternoon of sailing and friendly banter.
The first 3 races were sailed in conditions that were considered just above calm with a "slight gust" sometimes separating the fleet by over a leg while other times had the trailing boat gently move through the whole feet from last to 1st before stopping again and painfully watching boats do the same to them soon after. The breeze quickly set in for the rest of the afternoon with 12 races able to be completed in a consistent south-easterly. Thank you Don for setting a great course with no changes needed all afternoon and thank you everyone for assisting with recording of the score sheet.
Based on the results, there were skippers who definitely mastered the day's conditions with Gary taking out 1st spot with 22 points and 6 wins from the 12 races, congratulations Gary. Warren was second (30 points) with a very consistent day; with only 1 win but finished in the top-5 in all but 2 races. Russell took out third spot on countback from Terry with both finishing with 43 points.
Today's results have caused some movements in the overall position for the Club Championships with only 3 points separating myself, Gary, Russell and Warren with Terry and Don only a further 2 points behind. With two rounds left this could all change again with each skipper able to drop one of the 5 rounds from the final scores.
DF95 Club Championship Rd3 - Handicap results
We finally had some great weather yesterday and returned to the lake for round 3 of the Club Championships for DF65's.
The day started with a successful salvage of a DF65 that unfortunate went down on Tuesday morning during the Beginners 2 Winners; with the exception to the electronics the boat was unharmed and will sail again. Might be a good time for a reminder about checking battery hatches!
I also need to thank everyone who offered to assist with the trailer this week, always encouraging when a club has 3-4 members willing to put their hand when call like this is made.
As for the afternoon's racing, a great north-westerly eventually set in with 12 races completed and little movement in the course required. Due to a small electrical issue with my own boat during the afternoon I RO's a number of the later races and being an observer, I need to congratulate all skippers on the skills shown to both avoid collisions but more importantly the clear talking between everyone. During one race we had approx. 6 boats heading to the bottom gate all at the same time with discussion around giving room and overlap happening well before the gate. As a result, everyone rounded cleanly with no contacts.
There were other times where the silence across the lake due to the concentration of the skippers had a number of our neighbours came out their back yards to see if we had all suddenly disappeared 🙂.
As for the results, congratulations to David Kerr for taking out 1st place with John McCartney in second showing excellent improvement and securing his first top 3 finish this season. The ever present Warren finished in third with Philip only 2 points behind in forth.
After 3 rounds of the Club Championships (Handicap) we now have a new DF65 leader with David Kerr now 1 point ahead of Warren and Terry Jordan sitting in 3rd by the smallest of margins (1pt) to forth. There are 6 skippers within a few of points of each other between 4th and 8th including Greg Carter, Sel, Don and Russell. With 2 rounds left and the worst round able to be dropped by skippers anything could still happen to the placings before the end of the year.
Next weekend will be a DF95 day with the offer aways open to members if they want to have a sail of DF95, we do have a few spare boats available please contact either myself or Don. I know Phillip can't wait, with him having purchased a 95 over a month ago but due to cancellations and bad weather has not had a chance to put in on the water, the forecast is looking good Phillip.
I hope everyone has a good week.
DF95 Club Championship Rd2 - scratch results
With a few regular skippers away and the intermittent showers keeping others home, we had 6 brave staters for today's Rd 2 of the DF95 Club Championships. The fashion requirement of the day was definitely a wet weather jacket and a cover for the transmitter.
The Southern Easterly breeze made Don's job of setting the course very simple and as per usual thank you Don for the set-up and recovery of the marks. Gladly we did not need to do any rescues or recoveries for the day.
With the threat of some heavy showers on the horizon, it was decided to not have a break with all 12 races completed within approx. 2hrs. This was an excellent decision as within about 5mins of packing up, the clouds rolled in with some heavy rain hitting the area for the rest of the afternoon.
As for the sailing, there were a number of races where the finishing leg saw boats go from 5th to 2nd and vice versa. The day also saw the rounding marks being regularly targeted by a several skippers and although I can't recall the final count I don't think there was one race where someone wasn't doing a penalty or two for contact with a mark.
Overall, Don dominated the day with seven 1st places and 4 seconds from 12 races, finishing with a final score of 14 points. The next three boats were lot closer with only 3 points separating 2nd (myself on 25 points), Warren in 3rd on 26 points and Terry in 4th on 28 points. Hopefully Don can keep this going for next weekend's DF95 interclub event with Coomera.
Finally, a reminder that next weekend, we are hosting Coomera Radio Sailing Club for the 1st round of this year's interclub events. We currently have 8 DF95 skippers registered but with a spare boat still available, any members keen on having a sail please give myself or Don a call. The day is a very casual event to gain experience in larger fleet sailing with this being the first event for a number of the Coomera skippers.
DF65 Club Championship Rd2 - scratch results
Today's result have been a little delayed as I needed to wait for the score sheet to dry out..... Thank you Bob for shielding the sheet as best as you could while you still recorded the result during some of the heavier showers we encountered today. I hope you eventually dried out too. Thank also to Jeremy Price, who took time out of sailing to video one of the races. I believe this is now on available on the Redland Facebook page.
We also welcomed Owen Keates, a recently joined member who took the leap and joined his first race event, although he could not stay around for the whole afternoon, the smile I saw on his face as he left indicated he is hooked.
It was a good turnout today with 16 boat on the water and I think all skippers that attended today's sailing would agree that a great day was had by everyone with some good friendly sailing, great banter between skippers and the shower or two that did come through only caused minor disruptions.
The predicted South-Easterly breeze did not disappoint with the day starting with a mixture of A and B rigs. Those who changed to a A+ rig for the last few races definitely benefited as the breeze dropped.
Results were varied as to which Rig dominated with each race result affected by the gusts and strength of the wind at particular times. The stronger gusts around the bottom mark continued to cause some headaches all afternoon. The depth of the Redlands fleet and improved skills of the skippers is very evident with 6 different winners in the first 6 races and even more boats at one time or another leading the fleet.
As for the results, 4th was taken out by Will on 49 points with Gary only 2 points ahead in third spot (47 points). Russell finished in second on 38 points and myself taking out the day on 21 points.
I was reminded today that the 2nd round of the DF65 Interclub is being held in conjunction with the QLD State Titles hosted by the Sunshine Coast Radio Sailing Club on the 24th and 25th of May. The Interclub event is only on the Saturday results (24/5) and we would love to have one more Redlands skipper join to make sure we have a team of 5 for the interclub event with myself, Don, David Kerr and Sel currently entered.
Finally, Redlands is also hosting the 1st round of the DF95 interclub event against Coomera Radio Yacht Club on the 17th of May, if you are not sailing and would be interesting in volunteering on the day please talk to Don or give him a call. We also have one more spare DF95 available for any members keen on have a sail on the day.
Thank you again to everyone that attended today and have a great week.
DF95 Club Day results - 26/04/2025
When we arrived this afternoon it did not look promising with the only ripples on the lake being from lure cast by some of the locals looking to fish. Happily, by the time the first race started at 1pm a better than expected South-Easterly breeze set in allowing for 12 races to be completed under cloudless skies and a course that allowed a few losses and gains depending on how a skippers read the shifts and gusts.
One of our regular 65 skippers (Phillip Frahm) joined with a borrowed 95 and I feel he will soon start looking for his own boat after a great introduction to DF95's. Phillip had some promising finishes (2 seconds) and a day that could have been very different as twice I recall him going from 2nd to 6th within meters of the finish. Keep it up Phillip, I am sure the consistency will come.
Our regular started/scorer Bob was kept busy with some very close finishing for a fleet of 7 boats and a start/finish line approx. half-way across the lake. The comment of the day from Bob was "Who Knows!!" with his hands thrown in the air after one start where most of the fleet was definitely a little early. At least we are being keen to be on the line and a good way to practice for the upcoming DF95 Interclub event between Coomera Radio Yacht Club and Redlands on the 17th of May.
Don won the day on 20 points and five1st place finishes. I am sure it would not have been so close if Don did not have to miss two races due to a failed rudder servo. Great job in only missing one race after needing to retrieve your boat in race 4. One 1 point behind was myself and Terry Jordon took out third place on 29 points.
As mentioned above, on the 17th of May we are hosting the 1st round of the DF95 Interclub event with Coomera Radio Yacht Club. We would love a few more Redlands skippers to attend the day and if you are interested place contact myself or Don. Last year Coomera took out both rounds and I would love to get some revenge on home turf. Based on the improvement in our DF95 fleet since last year, I feel winning is a very good possibility.
Thank you finally to all the skippers for today. I can't recall too many instances of contact during the racing and penalties were being completed when required.
Next weekend is the 2nd Round of the DF65 Club Championships (scratch racing) and I expect to have a good number of skippers vying for this prize at the end of the year. I hope everyone has a good week and see you on the water soon.
DF65 Easter Classic - 19/04/2025
The DF65 Easter Classic was raced in near perfect weather of cloudless skies but a little more wind would have been appreciated. As we slowly move out of summer, the sun is also finally starting to lose some of that afternoon bite which is a relief to all sailors and making it a very pleasant afternoon at the lake under the shade of trees.
With a reduced fleet due to a number of regular skippers being away for Easter or family matters, everyone started the afternoon with high hopes of sharing the spoils of victory with easter eggs up for grabs for each win. With 4 of the first 5 races won by Gary Earl, I can only conclude that he had not yet bought easter eggs for the family and saw this opportunity to save a trip to the shops.... Last place was also awarded an egg giving Gary a very good haul after 5 races.
Gary continued to dominate the afternoon through both the handicap and scratch races ending with 7 wins from the 12 races, congratulations Gary finishing in 1st place on 17 points. David Kerr showed that consistency will always bring good result with only 1 win, but with 8 finishes in the top-3 (and no last places) he took out 2nd place on 26 points. Third place was taken out by me on 32 points just ahead of David Proctor (34 points).
Although Don could not stay around for the afternoon, thank you for setting the course with no changes required all afternoon. Thank you also to our resident Starter & Scorer Bob; it was noted that there were no start recalls all afternoon, not sure if this was due to brilliant skippers or some leniency from Bob due to Easter (a bribery of chocolate may have also helped).
Finally, a big thank you to David Kerr, with Don unable to stay around, David very generously hitched up the trailer and delivered it safe and sound back to Don's place.
Finally, thank you to all skippers for keeping the afternoon fun and friendly and I wish everyone a Happy Easter.
Regards
